In designing the Dún Laoghaire Library, our aim was to create a space that both honored the rich literary heritage of Ireland and embraced the forward-looking, vibrant spirit of its people. Situated between two historic church spires, the building was designed to act as a gateway, drawing visitors into a dynamic public space that connected both the past and the present.
We envisioned the library as a central hub, much like the piazzas of ancient Rome, where people could gather, learn, and reflect. The library’s layout is organized around a central courtyard, echoing the form of a classical Roman forum. Radiating from this hub are reading rooms and study areas, designed to provide quiet sanctuaries for reflection. The concept was to create a public space that could serve as both a community resource and a cultural destination.
