Tread Lightly
A Linear Festival along the Transcaucasian Trail
Tread Lightly is a nationwide cultural project laying the foundations of a Linear Festival through the mountains of Armenia. It’s ten-year mission is to bring the benefits of sustainable tourism to isolated local communities and fuse their traditions of hospitality and deep knowledge of place with the creativity and energy of the young.
We have applied an ‘architect’s eye’ to scout for opportunity sites along a walking route that crosses an ancient landscape of rich mythology, varied geology, renowned heritage and astounding beauty. Tread Lightly is a ‘grand projet’ of small scale collaborations with architecture schools, musicians, farmers, wine growers, chefs and artists developing projects using sustainable materials and techniques.
The project begins in the Dilijan National Park where we propose five pilot collaborations: refuges within ruins, rope bridge across a gorge, bathing within waterfalls, amphitheatre dug into a hillside, ecological interventions within a lake, tree houses, all projects that sit on the ground lightly, that engage with the landscape, that involve communities.
These projects create the milestones along an emerging network of hiking routes and provide destinations to aim for, places to wonder at the landscape, venues for festivals of music, food and community and with time will form an internationally recognised linear festival comparable to the great pilgrimage routes.
