Perched high with panoramic views of the surrounding Pyrenees, the building was a local landmark with a commanding presence over the town. It was weathered and needed thorough renovation. Its bones were good but the layout outdated, and ill suited to the owners’ wish for a communal and seasonal lifestyle.
We expended its internal courtyard creating a large airy, interactive environment that opened and closed with the seasons to temper the internal environment. In summer, the house “breathed” through the shaded stone courtyard, while in winter, the spaces were closed up to retain warmth and intimacy. A new roof projected from the main building, providing a 360-degree framed view of the distant mountains, a floating crown and striking architectural statement. The house was thus redefined, blending heritage with the new.
