How to integrate a large-scale performance venue into a constrained inner city heritage site with no adjacent affordable sites. The solution was to locate the performance spaces below the carpark (a former cemetery), with Art and Music departments facing a new playground over.
The great support from the school, overcame the complexity of removing an 18th-century burial ground that included notable figures such as Charles Wesley and George Stubbs. The building’s Corten cladding blends harmoniously with the adjacent 19th-century school structure, while the lift clock tower evokes the spirit of the church tower, linking past and present.
The basement courtyard serves as the project’s environmental engine, providing natural light, ventilation, and passive climate control, ensuring the building is both energy-efficient and a welcoming, flexible space for the students.
