Commissioned by the visionary Sorrell Foundation to deliver inclusive facilities that address young people’s alienation and restlessness, the project was directed by the young people themselves – a deeply empowering and inspiring process.

At the heart of the £3 million facility, named “The Mix,” is an inviting covered public street with graffitied walls, table tennis, and a fireplace. The architecture appears like a series of small scale workshops that borrowed from the local now defunct industrial heritage.
By engaging the youth in every step of the project, the Mix became a testament to the transformative power of inclusive design. The resulting facility features an array of amenities, including a street-level diner run by apprentice chefs, a multipurpose hall for events, recording studios, carpentry workshops, and a gymnasium. The project was ‘built out’ by one of Suffolk council’s framework architects.
